Amy Slaton and Tammy Slaton have lost a combined 550 pounds since 1000-lb Sisters premiered in 2020, and it’s time to look back at some family photos taken long before they embarked on their weight-loss journeys. When they first appeared on the reality TV landscape, Amy and Tammy weighed 400 and 725 pounds, respectively. Tammy was inspired to lose weight after a health scare landed her in a medically induced coma. Amy, on the other hand, wanted to lose weight to get healthy enough to start her own family.

Amy began her weight-loss journey during 1000-lb Sisters season 1. By focusing on diet, exercise, and weight-loss surgery, she went down from 400 to 275 pounds by season 3. Tammy started her weight-loss journey in 2022 by checking herself into a weight-loss rehabilitation facility, where she lost enough weight to qualify for bariatric surgery. Amy, Tammy, and the rest of the Slaton family have been active online, so 1000-lb Sisters fans have watched their extraordinary weight-loss transformations in real time.

Amy & Tammy Before Their Weight Loss Journeys

2008 Family Photo

Way back in 2008, Amy and Tammy’s half-sister Misty Wentworth posted a family photo of her sisters on the couch with her daughter, Emily, to Facebook. In the photo, Amy and Tammy are lying on the couch and are nearly unrecognizable from the women they’ve become. Back then, both women had limited mobility, especially Tammy. Since losing all the weight, Amy and Tammy have been enjoying a whole new quality of life.

Amy and Tammy have been trying new things, experimenting with their style, and achieving new milestones.

Amy has had two children, Glenn and Gage, since losing weight. 1000-lb Sisters season 5 revealed Amy’s domestic challenges as she struggles to be a single mother. In a December 2023 interview with PeopleAmy candidly discussed her decision to prioritize mental health and parenting over the pursuit of weight loss, saying, “You can’t have weight loss without mental health.” Following a challenging year marked by Amy’s divorce from Michael Halterman, her husband of six years, the 1000-lb Sisters star was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression, and acute stress disorder and is currently in therapy.

Amy & Tammy Weren’t Focused On Health

The Unsinkable Slaton Sisters

In 2008, Misty posted a photo from 2007 to Facebook where Amy and Tammy are sitting together on a park bench. In the photo, Amy’s smoking a cigarette. Amy quit smoking before she had children, but there have been recent rumors that she has started smoking again. Though Amy and Tammy were heavier and not at their healthiest, they were still laughing together and having a good time. The unwavering spirits of the 1000-lb Sisters stars are one of the reasons the show has continued to be so popular.

Even after Tammy’s husband, Caleb Willingham, died during 1000-lb Sisters season 5, Tammy stayed focused on her pursuit of better health.

Tammy met Caleb Willingham when she checked into rehab in 2022. The two fell in love and were married quickly. Tammy was able to lose weight faster than Caleb, so she got to leave the facility earlier than him. Though they spoke via video chat every day, the separation was difficult for both of them. Sadly, 41-year-old Caleb passed away due to complications caused by his obesity. Though Tammy was devastated by Caleb’s death, she fought hard to continue on her weight-loss journey, which is what Caleb would have wanted.

Amy Has Always Loved Red

Misty Does It Again

Misty must have an entire album of old family photos, because, in 2008, she posted another photo to Facebook of Amy from before she lost weight. In the photo, Amy is smiling and wearing a red shirt. Amy’s been wearing red a lot since losing weight, so it’s her signature color. Tammy and Amy both told People that their weight gain started back during their childhoods, and they attribute it to genetics, emotional eating, and socioeconomic factors. “I’ve always had a weight issue,” Tammy said. “I was born 9 lbs. 10 oz., and then I just kept gaining.

The microwave was our best friend,” Tammy said. “Ramen noodles, bowls of soup, things that were quick and easy — stuff that adds on carbs.” Amy and Tammy’s grandmother helped their mother raise them and their other siblings, and when their grandmother died in 1999, they both turned to food to fill the emotional void. This struggle was something they both had to overcome to lose weight.

Slaton Family Weight Loss Journeys

Amy and Tammy aren’t the only members of the Slaton family who have lost weight over the years. Their step-brother, Chris Combs, weighed 450 pounds when 1000-lb Sisters premiered, but he has since shed 150 pounds through diet, exercise, and bariatric surgery. Chris grew up with Tammy, Amy, and their other brother, Steven Slaton, in Shawneetown, Illinois.

Not to be left out, Amy and Tammy’s step-sister Amanda Halterman has lost over 300 pounds.

Though Amanda already had gastric bypass surgery, during 1000-lb Sisters season 5, she expressed serious interest in having a second surgery to lose even more weight. Though it isn’t uncommon for some bariatric surgery patients to undergo multiple surgeries, the surgery can present complications and isn’t without risk.
